We spent two years working with vendors all over the world to take magnetic flux leakage technology and build a scanner made for the inside of a fire tube. There's nothing else like it, and it reads corrosion to about +/-5%.

The Technology

What is MFL?

Magnetic flux leakage — MFL — is a non-destructive way to find corrosion, pitting, and wall loss in steel. Here's the short version of how it works:

  • Magnets saturate the steel as the scanner head runs down the tube.
  • Disruption — wherever corrosion has thinned the steel, the magnetic field leaks.
  • Sensors pick up that leak, and the software turns it into remaining wall thickness.

What you end up with is a clear picture of where the tube is failing and how bad it is — so you can plan the work instead of reacting to a failure.

The Scanning Process

Fast, effective, simple — and safe

Remove the Burner

We make the fuel-gas lines safe, pull the burner and arrestor, and log a visual check on the way in.

Clean & Prepare

We clear the soot, scale, and rust out of the tube with our brushes and compressed air so the scanner reads true.

Inspect & Scan

The scanner runs the tube and builds the image on the spot. We know the condition right then — and we call you the second a tube reads critical.

Reassemble

We put the burner back, secure it, and relight it exactly how we found it. We leave the treater the way it was.

Every scan lives in a secure web database, and you get a weekly email with the prior week's results — pull it up at the office or out in the field.

The Stakes

About 99% of fire tube failures happen in the bottom of the tube, where the flame hits it hardest. That's exactly where we look — so a hot spot turns into a planned repair instead of an emergency. From there we can protect the tube with cathodic protection, or change it out with our crane trucks when it's done.

Common Questions

Fire tube scanning FAQ

Nope — that's the whole point. Nothing on location gets shut in. The vessel can stay full and the well can keep producing. The only thing we do is turn off the burner.

The scan itself is under 30 minutes. Cleaning the tube so it reads true is usually what takes the longest, but most tubes are wrapped up in under an hour.

Anything over 75% wall loss is a "Red." When we hit one, we call your point of contact right then — on top of the weekly email that covers the rest of your tubes.

Neither one. MFL reads the steel itself, so scale and build-up don't throw it off, and the weather doesn't change a thing.

Not much. Our crews handle all the safe-work permits and the inspection themselves. We just need a contact and a heads-up on which sites you want hit first.
